It looks like a few students did choose to audit the ResTek servers and firewalls. It looks like most of the activity was Nessus scanning, which is a bit disappointing but I suppose it is to be expected. I left a few simple surprises on a virtual server, “Tyr”, so that an ASCII art banner is displayed on certain ports :) I’m curious if anyone found it. If they simply used Nessus, that is somewhat unlikely. I look forward to reading their reports. I’m hoping someone figured out the relationship between the servers, the significance of their addressing, naming, order, and so on.
I moved all of the content hosted on the Depts. server today to our primary webserver. This eliminates the need to maintain a separate server for a database that is less than 100MB, greatly simplifying upgrades. This was accomplished fairly transparently using IP address aliasing (to avoid stale DNS caches) along with virtual hosts in Apache.
The box will likely be used as a dedicated logging server, but there are other options as well. In any case, I’m glad I have one less MySQL/Apache/PHP installation to maintain. It’ll make keeping things updated much simpler.
This summer is promising to be very busy. I didn’t think I’d have all that much to do, but I created a task list and it just keeps growing…
